Summer Reading for Students
In order to be better prepared for academic success at Saint Mary’s and in college, students are required by the English, History, and Religion Departments to read the following:
What is the What by Dave Eggers
ISBN-10: 0307385906
Sophomores & Freshmen
Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom
ISBN-10: 076790592X
The Circuit by Francisco Jimenez
ISBN-10: 0395979021
All students are to be prepared for a test in their English classes on their readings in the first week of school. The novel(s) chosen provide a variety of perspectives which supplement the English, History, and Religion curricula. The test, discussions, and related in-class assignments will be calculated as part of the student’s semester grade. The book(s) are readily available at Barnes & Noble, Borders, and other local bookstores.
Students will be asked to do additional writing and / or projects involving the summer reading texts in their History and Religion classes. All students who will be taking AP English, on both the junior and senior levels, are responsible for reading the novel as well as the ones assigned by their AP teachers.
Keep in mind the following:
- Make notes and write questions in the margins of your book as you read. The notes will be valuable for review prior to testing.
- In a notebook, take notes on important aspects of your reading after each chapter.
- Read for 35-45 minutes, take a break, write and continue reading.
- The test will take the full 45 minute period.
- You will NOT be allowed the use of a book or notes during the test.
