High School Placement Test (HSPT)

All incoming 9th grade applicants are required to take the High School Placement Test (HSPT) as part of the admissions process. Saint Mary’s will consider your HSPT score as one component of your application review.
The HSPT is a 2.5-hour standardized exam that measures skills in:
- Verbal and quantitative reasoning
- Reading
- Mathematics
- Language
Note: Transfer students do not take the HSPT.

HSPT Testing Information
Applicants for 9th grade may take the HSPT at any of the nine Oakland Diocese Catholic high schools to which they’ve applied.
Important: If you have not applied to Saint Mary’s, you may not take the HSPT at Saint Mary’s.
Saint Mary’s HSPT Test Date: Saturday, January 10, 2026
- Arrival: 7:30 AM (accommodations) or 8:00 AM (standard time)
- Test Begins: 8:00 AM (accommodations) or 8:30 AM (standard time)
- Pickup: 12:00 PM (standard time) or 1:30 PM (accommodations)
If you plan to take the HSPT at a different Catholic high school, please indicate that during registration. This will not affect your admissions decision.
Families will receive HSPT results by email.

Extended Time & Learning Differences
Students approved for extended time will receive time and a half to complete the HSPT.
If your student has a documented learning difference and may require accommodations, please contact our Admissions Team at admissions@stmchs.org for additional guidance on how to submit documentation through your application portal.

8th Grade HSPT Prep Workshop
Saint Mary’s partners with Classroom Matters to offer a preparation course designed to help students feel confident and ready for the HSPT. This workshop provides an overview of the exam and helps students become familiar with its format and content areas.
