Coach Sommers heads into his 11th season as head coach of the Saint Mary’s girls varsity tennis team. The Saint Mary’s varsity girls tennis team competes for the league title every year, consistently finishing in the upper half of the standings. Along with assistant coach, Ms. McManus, teamwork and character building are emphasized. While striving to improve, the team has fun, and the players build long-standing relationships.
Coach Sommers graduated from Saint Mary’s College High School in 1974, and UC Berkeley in 1978. He received his graduate degree from Cal State Hayward in 1983. He played varsity tennis for the Panthers, and has competed at several levels of USTA Tennis in the Bay Area. Coach Sommers previously coached varsity girls softball for five years, as well as freshman girls basketball for three years. He is also the current head coach of the boys varsity tennis team. Coach Sommers is in his 12th year as a math teacher at Saint Mary’s College High School, and enjoys coaching many of his current, and former students.
Before coaching at Saint Mary’s, coach Sommers coached softball, baseball, basketball, and track at the School of the Madeleine in the CYO program for over 20 years. He also spent five years as their Athletic Director. As an alum, Coach Sommers takes great pride in coaching and teaching the sport of tennis, and working with young women and men.
