Boys Volleyball 2022-2023 Season
Panthers Lose to Cougars in First Round of NCS, Finish Season at 15-8.
May 2, 2023—On a chilly evening in Albany, California, the Varsity Boys Volleyball team traveled to take on their cross-town rival, the Albany High Cougars, in the First Round of the Division III North Coast Section Playoffs. This was the fourth meeting of the season between these two teams, with Albany winning all three games prior to this matchup.
This fourth meeting proved to be a very close, back-and-forth affair as both teams would win critical points and sets, pushing the match to the fifth and final round. However, with aspirations to finally take down the Cougars this season and to advance to the Second Round of NCS, the Panthers would unfortunately lose the fifth and final set by the score of 15-13, eliminating them from the playoffs.
Despite the loss, the Panthers have a lot to be proud of this season. Under first year Head Coach, Michael Pacheco, the Panthers were able to win 15 games this season after not winning a single game a season ago, and finish in second place in the Tri-County Athletic League (TCAL). In addition, this young Panthers squad will be returning all of their players from this season as they did not have a single senior player. Congratulations on a fantastic season Panthers, and we look forward to quite the encore for the 2024 season.
Panthers Sweep RedHawks to Advance to TCAL Semifinals
April 22, 2023—After finishing out the regular season on a fantastic note, the Varsity Boys Volleyball team opened the TCAL tournament Friday evening hosting their first ever league playoff game against the Vallejo High Redhawks. Even though the Panthers were now transitioning into a playoff atmosphere, the lights were not too bright for this Panthers squad as they would sweep the Redhawks by the score of 3-0, punching their ticket to the TCAL Semifinal Round.
The Panthers got a strong team-wide performance to help achieve this victory and winning their first league playoff match in program history.
The Panthers will, once again, play at home on Wednesday, April 26th, when they play host to the Jesse Bethel High Jaguars, looking to punch another ticket that will take them to the TCAL Championships. Game time is set for 6:30PM.
Panthers Win Regular Season Finale, Await TCAL Playoffs
April 17, 2023—On a Monday evening on Hagler Court at Saint Mary’s College High School, the Varsity Boys Volleyball team hosted the John Swett High Warriors of Crockett, California, in the team’s regular season finale. The Panthers were impressive from start to finish in this matchup, sweeping the Warriors by the score of 3-0 and extending their winning streak to 5 games.
The Panthers got solid contributions from Sophomore, Francisco “Pancho” De Los Rios, Sophomore, Dylan Corbat, Junior, Tyler Soto, and Junior, Maxwell Remington McLeod, propelling the Panthers to a season final win, and finishing the regular season with a 13-6 record—a major improvement from a season ago when the boys’ volleyball program was reintroduced to the school community following the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Panthers will now prepare for the Tri-Country Athletic League Playoffs where they will host their first league playoff game on Friday, April 21st, at Hagler Court. The time and the opponent have yet to be determined. Good luck Panthers!
Panthers Avenge Early Season Loss to Richmond with 3-1 Victory
March 31, 2023--On a Friday afternoon at Hagler Court, the Varsity Boys Volleyball Team hosted the Richmond High Oilers, a team that beat the Panthers earlier in the season in three straight sets. However, this second meeting proved to be quite different as the Panthers would beat the Oilers by the score of 3-1 as the team would get strong contributions from every member of their team.
The Panthers will look to build off of their dominant victory as they will play host to the Vallejo High Red Hawks, a team that the Panthers beat earlier in the season by the score of 3-1. Game time is set for Monday, April 3rd, at 5:30PM at Hagler Court.
Panthers Beat Eagles For Second Time This Season
March 29. 2023—After a busy week on the road last week, the Varsity Boys Volleyball Team returned to Hagler Court to take on the Kennedy High Eagles, a team that the Panthers found themselves in a very tight contest in their first meeting but ultimately won in 5 games.
This time around, the Panthers took control of the match from the get-go as they would win the first two games to take a 2-0 lead. The Eagles would fight back and take the third game to make things interesting, but the Panthers would eventually put a stamp on their victory by taking the fourth and final game of the contest.
The Panthers will now shift their focus to Friday’s home game where they will play host to the Richmond High Oilers. Game is scheduled for 4:00PM.
Panthers Sweep Jaguars in 2nd Meeting of the Year, Extend Winning Streak to 3 Games
March 20, 2023—In their second meeting of the season, the Panthers took on the Jesse Bethel High Jaguars Monday evening where they won in decisive fashion by the score of 3-0. Unlike the first meeting between these two teams at the end of February where the Panthers showed resiliency and grit to overcome a 2-0 deficit to win in 5 games, the Panthers set the tone right from the get-go that proved to be too much for the Jaguars.
The Panthers got solid contributions from everyone in the lineup, but the few who stood out where Sophomore, Francisco “Pancho” De Los Rios, and Junior, Maxwell Remington McLeod who scored key points to lead the Panthers to victory.
The Panthers will look to extend their winning streak as they will travel to take on their crosstown rival, the Albany High Cougars, on Wednesday evening. The game is scheduled to start at 7:00PM.
Panthers Win 2nd Straight, Top Eagles 3-2
Tuesday, February 28—In a second straight evening where the Varsity Boys Volleyball took to the court, the Panthers overcame yet another deficit to defeat the Kennedy High Eagles of Richmond, California, 3-2.
Unlike the previous game against the Jesse Bethel High Jaguars where the Panthers had to overcome a 2-0 deficit to win that game 3-2, the Panthers found themselves down 2-1 to the Eagles following the 3rd set but would eventually overcome this deficit as well to win by the very same score of 3-2. The Panthers were once again led by Sophomore, Francisco “Pancho” De Los Rios, and Junior, Maxwell Remington McLeod. The Panthers also got key aces from Sophomore, Dylan Corbat, to help fuel the Panthers to their second straight victory.
The Panthers will have the next week off, but will return to action on Tuesday, March 14th, when they travel to take on the Richmond High Oilers. Game time is scheduled for 7:00PM.
Panthers Overcome 2-0 Deficit to Beat Jaguars
Monday, February 27—On a cold and rainy Monday evening on the Saint Mary’s campus, the Varsity Boys Volleyball Team played host to Tri County Athletic League (TCAL) opponent, the Jesse Bethel High Jaguars of Vallejo, California. This relatively young Panthers squad was put to the test early as the Jaguars came out on fire to start the game, winning the first two games to go up 2-0 in the match.
However, even though the Panthers found themselves in a deep hole after two games, they refused to give in and climbed all the way back to win the next three sets, defeating the Jaguars by the score of 3-2. The Panthers were led by Sophomore, Francisco “Pancho” De Los Rios, and Junior, Maxwell Remington McLeod, who played critical roles to mount the Panthers comeback, giving the program their first win in two years. This win also marked the first victory for new Panthers head coach, Michael Pacheco.
The Panthers will look to build off of this come-from-behind win as they will return to action on Tuesday, February 28th, as they will host the Kennedy High Eagles of Richmond. The game is scheduled to start at 5:30pm.
