Coaching Staff (2023-2024)
Kevin Flemer ('13)
Head Coach Kevin Flemer will enter his 5th season and his first year as the head varsity baseball coach for Saint Mary’s after previously serving as the pitching coach for the varsity program in his first four seasons dating back to the spring of 2019.
In his first four seasons as the pitching coach, Flemer helped the Panthers achieve an overall record of 63-35, coupled with 3 trips to the North Coast Section Playoffs, a North Coast Section DIV Title and a trip to the NorCal Regional Playoffs in 2022, and a Tri-County Athletic League Regular Season Title in 2023.
Flemer has also had the luxury of coaching some of the best pitchers in the program including 2021 Panther graduate; Ryan Shimabakuru (College of Marin); the 2022 duo of Noah Zirkle (Fresno State) and EJ McGrew (Willamette University); and the 2023 trio of Eli Fogelman (Sonoma State University), Quinn Connell (College of Marin), and Nico Laub-Sabater (Pomona Pitzer).
Flemer, a native of El Cerrito, CA, and 2013 alum of Saint Mary’s College High School, was a two-sport athlete in both the football and baseball programs. In football, he excelled as the team’s starting quarterback where he won First-Team All-League in 2012. In baseball, Flemer was a 3x All-League Pitcher of the Year (2011-2013), a First-Team All-State Utility Player (2012) according to ESPNHS, a 2x league champion (2012, 2013), and an NCS Champion in 2013.
After completing his high school degree at Saint Mary’s, Flemer signed his National Letter of Intent to pitch at Oregon State University from 2013-2015 before transferring to play at the University of California from 2016-2018.
Casey Filson (’85)
Assistant Coach Casey Filson returns for his 33rd season. Coach Filson has been involved in the art of coaching since 1991. Has been a head coach in the sports of football, basketball, softball and baseball at Saint Mary's. As a baseball coach for the program, Filson has been a part of two NCS Championship Teams as an Assistant Coach in both the 2009 and 2013 seasons. In his last head coaching stint with the Panthers from 2015-2016 where he achieved an overall record of 37-18 in that two-year span, Filson took his teams to the 2015 NCS Championship Game, and advanced to the Quarterfinal Round in the 2016 season.
Coach Filson has worked with numerous student-athletes who have gone on to play all levels of college and professional athletics. With a background in psychology, Coach Filson’s greatest strength is getting the most out of his players over his years in various programs.
As an alum of Saint Mary's with the Class of 1985, Filson was a three-sport athlete in the football, basketball, and baseball programs for the Panthers before attending San Jose State University.
In addition to serving as the Assistant Coach, Filson also serves as the Dean of Students and teaches Advanced Jazz Ensemble on campus. In fact, in his spare time, Filson performs music in many different venues across the Bay Area.
Filson, who is native of the East Bay, resides in Albany, California, with his wife and two children who have played multiple sports for the Panthers as well.
Paul Flemer
Assistant coach Paul Flemer enters his 2nd straight season as the Pitching Coach for both the JV & Varsity programs, and his 5th season overall with the Panthers dating back to the 2014 baseball season (2014-2016, 2024-2025). During his first coaching stint with the Panthers, Flemer led his pitching staffs to an Earned Run Average (ERA) of a 2.52, a total of 57 wins in a three-year span from 2014-2016, a Tri-County Athletic League (TCAL) Title (2015), and three consecutive trips to the North Coast Section (NCS) Playoffs with two of those trips involving an NCS championship appearance (2014, 2015).
In the first year of his 2nd stint with the Panthers in the 2024 season, Coach Flemer led the pitching staff to a team ERA of a 2.92, 16 total wins, a TCAL League Championship, and an NCS Playoff Appearance and Semifinal finish to the season.
Flemer, a native of El Cerrito, California, was born in New York in 1958 before eventually moving to Daly City, CA, and then Petaluma, California, where he attended St. Vincent de Paul High School and graduated in 1976. Following his high school graduation, Flemer attended UCLA where he earned a bachelor’s degree in history in 1980. He would then pursue a master’s and doctoral degree from UC Berkeley and then go on to teach history at Saint Mary’s College in Moraga, California, which he has done so for over 30 years.
In his spare time, Flemer enjoys reading, learning more about the game of baseball, playing golf, cooking and baking, and spending time with his family and loved ones.
Jeff Ransom
Coach Jeff Ransom enters his 6th season with the Saint Mary’s baseball program, serving as the catchers and infielding coach for the Junior Varsity team. Prior to his arrival to Saint Mary’s, Ransom first started coaching in 2013 with the Berkeley High Travel Baseball Team and would do so until 2018 before becoming heavily involved with the Saint Mary’s Summer & Fall Travel Baseball Program and, ultimately, with the Saint Mary’s program in 2019. As head JV coach of the 2024 season, Ransome led the team to a 12-5 overall record.
In the early stages of his life, Ransom grew up in Berkeley, CA and attended Berkeley High School from 1975-1978 where he starred in not only baseball, but also in football as the school’s starting quarterback for three seasons. On the gridiron, Ransom received 1st Team All-League honors and set the school record for passing yards that still stands to this day. On the baseball field, Ransom excelled as utility player for the Yellowjackets, being the team’s top pitcher, catcher, and hitter where he won Co-MVP and 1st Team All-League honors his junior year and followed it up with another 1st Team All-League selection his senior year.
After his stellar career at Berkeley High, Ransom attended the College of Alameda to play baseball for two semesters before being selected in the 5th Round of the MLB Draft by the San Francisco Giants in 1978 where he excelled in the Giants minor league organization. With his strong play in the Giants minor league system, Ransome would finally make his Major League Debut in 1981 with the Giants. After a successful three-year stint with the Giants, Ransom would play his last game with the club in the Fall of 1984. He would then finish the rest of his MLB career with the Atlanta Braves organization (1985), Detroit Tigers organization (1987), and the LA Dodgers organization (1988). Following the end of his MLB career, Ransome played overseas in the Italian Professional League in Nettuno, Italy (1989-1992).
Coach Ransom looks forward to the upcoming season working with the JV program that consists of young and talented players.
