Player Profile: Elizabeth Lenton

By Zach Bradley

el

Today we spoke with golf star, Elizabeth Lenton.  Elizabeth recently won the TCAL Individual Championship, placed 8th at the NCS Division 2 Championships, and ended her season shooting 83 at the NCS Division 1 Championships.  She is, according to several longtime Saint Mary’s coaches, the best female golfer in school history.   And, remember she’s only a sophomore!  Below are Elizabeth’s thoughts on her golf game, the Saint Mary’s team, and the support she’s gotten from Coach Peterson.

Q: How did you get into your sport?
A: My dad started playing golf in the military, when he moved away from his golf buddies, he wanted someone to play with, so my brothers and I started taking lessons and joined First Tee at Diablo Creek golf course.

Q: What do you like best about your Saint Mary’s team?
A: The girls on the team are really kind and supportive. We always encourage each other before a match. Win or lose, we always have fun.

Q: What has been the highlight of your Saint Mary’s athletic career thus far?
A: The highlight of my Saint Mary’s career would have to be shooting a 79 at the TCAL tournament. I feel like it was a breakthrough for me because I worked really hard and was fairly consistent throughout my round. In golf it is very easy to mess up on one hole, and that can change the course of your entire match.  I often have one or more “bad holes”, but I waited till the last whole to have a slip up and it wasn’t anything major.el

Q: Do you have a favorite story you could share about one of the coaches or your teammates?
A: In the beginning, our team was struggling because we did not have enough players.  A few matches in, two more players joined and gave us a fighting chance.  I was able to play in a group with the new players and give them tips, which I really enjoyed.  We even won the first match where they joined us.  That was icing on the cake.

Q: Do you have a pre-match ritual?  (Special meal? Certain pieces of clothing? A routine? Etc…)

A: My pregame routine is wait for the bell, rush to the course, change clothes, hit a couple balls and go.

Q: What advice would you give to a new player/teammate?

A: You will have good rounds and bad rounds.  Don’t let the bad rounds get the best of you.  Work hard and you won’t regret it.

Q: Any hopes or goals that you have for yourself and for your team next season?

A: I hope that next season I am shooting in the low 70’s for 18 holes and that we all keep working on our game so we can win TCALs next season.

Q: Anything else you’d like to add?

A: Mr. Petersen is always encouraging and makes us want to give 100 percent.  I appreciate the energy he brings to every round.  He makes it fun for all of us!
