so the purpose of this meeting is to give parents the new parents an overview as to what enrichment week is and why it's important to take Mary's as well just to explain some of the details again I will post the PowerPoint so you can access that at any time and I hope I I know there will be more questions I would actually like it if you would put questions in the chat and we'll just at the very end I'll just take some time to answer questions are kind of write them down if they're not answered a long way so as you saw in Richmond is March 6th a tempest in the official days travel days go from before that date to the after that date pending on what what activities the kids are doing the philosophy this is the proper way developed by Larry Park our president many many years ago and tried to come up with a program that allows students to really experience education outside of the classroom and he felt that if he had had the opportunities with his conversations with he had with his mom if if he had had the opportunity to go outside of the Bay Area she would have happily save money along the way to that opportunity cuz it would change his life it would change maybe the way he would be able to see things and so when he was doing some workshops he thought this would be a great thing to bring to St Mary's is a way for kids to develop chips with teachers but also other students and students if they wouldn't necessarily hang out with so that's really the that the part of the the the only program is to take a topic or trip or a and develop a course around it that gets kids to experience life outside of the classroom but everything is educational educational one another so what it is it is I'm each teacher is asked to create a course or a trip based on their level of interest and then we work together on making and creating the itinerary and all those things it is the mix of careers cultural wreck is molasses a lot of it is just getting out and playing which is so important these days for the for our kids I'm also business this has a mandatory. It is we considered which health he's a school days so this is not extra week for a spring break trip or a family trip that's not what this is about this is purposely placed here so that students have an opportunity to be with one another and with other with other teachers that they may not have an opportunity for me technical difficulties let me go back so with that being said let's go on here everything is based on our lasallian core principles and are assigned educational outcomes they are far as topics are concerned they are all cultural educational experiences they might be rear expiration as some of them are physical wellness and Recreation and often we try to tie service and spirituality into all of the courses we have quite frankly so hard to tie service and spirituality to Drivers Ed but but most of the courses online with being able to put those in we have the biggest questions Howard Howard Howard the students assigned to their trips students are already at the start of each year our educational technologist creates a random generator spreadsheet for me with priority number such as already have the priority number priority numbers with students until the catalog comes out in December and but this is what helps to create front of an an equitable way of students getting their first second or third choice my last probably five or six years we've almost almost every student maybe 10 out of the whole student body didn't get one of their three choices will go through catalog it looks like this but it'll be online paper copies will be available in December students get to go through and pick three courses and then they register online for those three core courses a number from the lower numbers from 1 to 100 or more likely to get their first or second choice numbers from 101 to 200 are maybe you might get your second or third choice or maybe all your choice will be full try to talk to the kids at what time and let them know that there's a strategy around this like don't try to don't then I'll I'll show you that in in one of the next slides don't try to get into the three most popular horses if your number is 1 499 why you got to be strategic about it and I'll explain that in a little bit the biggest thing is they want to meet new people I know Mike both of them met some really great friends that they would never have met in a classroom and there they continue to be friends to this day and they they met them through their enrichment week course my daughter met one of her best friends in something called Circa that was a few of her I forgot the name of the place in Emeryville to the circus Arts anyway we used to partner with them and it was a break for Stickley exhausting but they had a we had a blast a perfect course one's all four grade levels and last year we had one course on to the next five last year we had a coarseness galleons course and it was on a creativity creativity writing and reflection and she had she rented an Airbnb in Santa Cruz and it was Monday through Friday she only had eight spots cuz that's what the the Airbnb had and it ended up being just that she had so many kids want to do it but since she took two seniors to Juniors two sophomores and two freshman none of them knew each other before they left and they after four days it was real Kerbal how close they became they spent this really quality time cooking together riding together taking walks on the beach together so it was really a beautiful beautiful experience and one that just by the nature of it I was able to draw from all four grade levels so that's really what our goal is to try to blend the grades as but much as we can I use this one around the world in five days we've done this course each year because it's literally the one of the better courses just get out and about and that is literally going around to different to the Mission District Chinatown North Beach and experience the different cultures that we have just just in our own neighborhood but I wanted the fact that if you notice the the minimum maximum enrollment and this one could go up to 16 and but like when I was mentioning the other one with Miss Galion she could only take 8 when it says that means that there's a real that's going to be a really tough when you get into as opposed to some of the other ones that are going to have a bigger pool people that be able to go into you also notice the where and when this discourse does not I'll take place on campus they meet at the BART station each day and they travel in into San Francisco by Bart and you'll notice that the meals are included and the students provide their own our tickets and that's a pretty standard. pretty standard course some of the other courses that are there you can see best of the bay needs Town campus then travels off campus you have to pay attention when you're reading the the the catalog so when and where everybody meets culinary school Kitchen on fire is up on Shattuck Avenue and they they reached out to us about two weeks ago to say hey you guys coming back they love having our kids I'm about 20 kids we will learn to cook which is actually very beneficial for families cuz hopefully they come home and cook you as well my driver's ed is a fried and true one we meet on campus the kids will actually this year at least when my last correspondence with them the kids will actually be able to drive off campus one day one in the afternoons to get there first 3 driving opportunities so that's pretty exciting are the smartest kids on campus this year were the I think we had eight who did lifeguard training to get certified in lifeguard to be a lifeguard for all employed this summer and made a lot of money so that is a great one if students can already swim that one meets at the El Cerrito pool extreme sports is one again that meets on campus and goes off campus web so you would and looking at the catalog you would definitely need to as a family need to choose which ones fit for what you're doing this is when times when carpools or not necessarily going to work you're going to have to figure out the transportation getting to and from school again just some pictures we're going to be able to go back to Caritas kids to our cabin leaders we weren't able to do that. Did you watch the New Year's so excited about that careers in science with bruising Athletics and cruise and science hopefully we both will be going this year the teachers now are still building their local at local courses so I won't know that until around Thanksgiving time but they're really going to finally do the prison science one is great again covid really put a wrinkle in something since the last year many places that were open so we had a lot of people we had more people come to us than we go there but this picture is from 2000 and 2020 I believe is when they went to Tesla in a lot of places don't offer unfortunately things anymore I'm sorry so and then making sensor world king would be that one that would be considered some exercise but they go some beautiful places and do height making sense of your world was all about act all white gum so this is up in VR the virtual reality place in San Francisco is range for a really comes down to the teachers being creative and offering that for the kids they try to think what are the kids want to do we'll have about thirty horses to choose from maybe post a 40 depending on how creative our kids are teachers are as far as some of the details transportation is usually taken care of a lot of times people take BART together and they will travel on the public transportation that way they sometimes we have depending on the size we will actually get a bus but most most are on their own the teachers will provide us and families with day-to-day activities I write in their flexibility as a key because as you know things change and in 2020 the week of our enrichment week was the week we shut down and literally each day different things were changing so we had to put and make different make different plans in ritual week is not part of tuition so it's all on the families for these local and on campus or local travel horses those will be built out of business office price starting in February because we will be figuring out all I'll show you the timeline a little bit later price February where is the the courses that are now being filled will start in October most likely as you seen from the emails that I've sent and hopefully you will be able to come to some of the meetings this this evening or tomorrow evening we're happy to be able to offer what we call the bigger trips and the only reason we do registration now is literally to get Airlines booked and hotels book that that are centered bands and all that stuff so as you know you already know about all these trips that you will see though that the reason I put this one in is that anyway anytime we travel we tried to do two things one is to go to a lasallian school if it's in the area as well as go to local colleges so that kids even if they're freshmen or sophomores that they're having that no matter where they go so in this case they took a trip to New Orleans a couple years ago this from a couple years ago but they went last year as well but they went to Dallas and New Orleans and were able to go meet the student leaders from nap school as well as they went Wayne and some of the other local colleges so that's that's important we want to take advantage of it anytime or anywhere with that's what we want to do the same thing is the travel information actually and I'll show you where look at that for the for the bigger trips and I'm really focusing more on the bigger trip the itinerary is is preliminary at this point and will be developed as we get closer to March the cost of the trip as you saw part of my email you Siri change of prices and just so you know we noticed that prices them at one talking to her for the tour group we used the tour company they they said that you know cost of everything has gone up and we saw an increase of at least five to eight hundred on a lot of the time a lot of this from just even from last year so that's just you know the cost of where we are at this moment but it a lot has to depend depend on the number of students that are traveling so we'll make the accommodation one rosters filled parents will be billed for these trips the big ones that start now will start October to Remember December and then sometimes families have made other arrangements with the business. that is always work these are kind of these are the dates for enrichment week and it has as we're going now we are right here in in September the application is due to me by Tuesday the 27th the as I mentioned in the email to is I will be meeting with the students this Wednesday Thursday Friday those are students have to choose one of those dates to come get an application for me as well as the pair a student contract and I'm really going to talk about Behavior expectations and something we really need to be clear about on these trips they're hard these trips hard this is not a vacation this is not spring break you're not going to be sitting on the beach everyday reading a book these trips are hard in that you're going to be walking a lot going to eating different foods you're going to be tired up late and you know you can go to bed late and up early it's it's opportunity to be with other people and to learn about other people but also but other cultures and it's really important to have an open mind and an open heart for that and so that's what I'm really going to talk about in my meetings with kids this isn't a game it's not spring it's an educational Adventure so dusty and you got to be willing to try new things and be open to that someplace if it can be really cold most most the places we travel to Orange Beach weather but it is it really important for students have the right mindset going into this and be prepared for that we will in I will have by early October I'll have the overnight published and you will get an email that is something you're doing otherwise a catalog if you see their bolded early December is when we have will have a catalog ready I will meet with the freshman sophomore is usually in one of our either study periods or a block just to kind of questions and give them a little strategy on how to choose the courses and then they register before we leave for our Christmas break and they you dead me to print out the form sign it so that you know what they're signing up for and then after Christmas then won't will let them know what courses that they work that they got into as I mentioned the beginning of students pretty much every student gets one of their three courses so that's why it's super important pick the horse that is good for them this is my probably one of my favorite quotes from Brother Augustine about about relationships and it really is that you can't really formed relationship the significant relationship without having time with each other and our days go so fast we just don't have time with this kind of relationship that we build your own enrichment week there cannot be significant burning we learn so much from other people and that's what I think is reflection of this program overall I'm going to show you this before we go to questions that's one of my favorite favorite pictures that was as they were getting ready for us to walk down that was 2020 I am going to show one more I want to show you the website so that so everything is posted on the website so if you go to Student Life you'll see enrichment week so now all the dates and everything that I shared as in here I will have this PowerPoint posted are all the dates here is a FAQ that that I've had since I just posted it here if you want to look at that yours are catalog from last year so if you want to see what what course offerings we had last year as well here's more information about the policies and procedures that I put in there and then here is the application process so that you can see it again this was all in the email that I sent out but this is a little bit easier to find all the Flyers that I have received her in here and the preliminary canaries right are right here so you have access to all this information on the website now and that is it what if I forgot oh even if your children are not traveling this year I'm going to encourage you to get passports because maybe one day they will and the passport situation has been quite challenging I don't know if it's gotten any better but I would say please just get the passport if you already have a passport check the dates right now because often they have to be 6 months ahead of time so you it has to be valid through October 2023 some countries are different but universally we just asked everybody to have a passport that is valid for 2023 if you go to any of the sessions today that's what everybody will will tell you all the teachers one other thing and this is this we're parents this is why we really need your help we really need you to be our front line and help us make sure that students are set up for Success that your children are set up for 6 a.m. with the issues that we have Doreen enrichment we often come from the fact that we didn't know that there were certain behaviors that has it doesn't happen at school and one from a few years ago where a child was vaping and was caught and and he doesn't in his sorrowful way talked about being addicted and how he just literally couldn't stop he was in a foreign country with a vape pen and we all know different countries have different views of that it is incredibly difficult to help when we are this far away if you know your child is suffering from something with it don't encourage them to sign up because we we are very limited in what we can offer when we take a group of students especially specifically oversees the United States and we had a student recently who because being tired and being tired and I'm just combobulated with her time zone begin sleepwalking and reach her roommate's out just happened a few times the parents let us know because the child hadn't done it in a while but but we have to remember they're under when you travel you're under stress and and so knowing these things ahead of time we might be able to work out of solution but we need you to be really really honest and cuz you know your kids best and if your child has food allergies that are extraordinary we we won't be able to accommodate that without no well in advance to be able to say yes we can or no we can't usually we can but it's a child has an eating disorder we're not able to sit next to them and monitor their food intake if your child is really really suffers from ordinary Society we're not going to be able to take a date out just with one child when we have 25 others were on a trip so again I ask your help we want everybody to have an amazing amazing adventure but we need to know much as possible ahead of time because they're not always put on to the health forms as well so we don't know we we are fine find so that's what I asked for you finally just we are where that travel advisories go up and down we had in the past travel many times to Haiti and then there became a time when we knew that Katie was not stable and we couldn't go there anymore r company has assured us that the group the places we are going or even though that the state department will say it's a certain level where we're going and the people were working with boots on when I called boots on the ground I'm assured us that they have all the safety Jackson Place but please if you're going to be fearful and please don't send them but we would never ever ever put our star students are our faculty and any kind of a situation where we didn't think it would say I hope I just need you to understand that as well so I talked straight for 27 minutes I'm going to stop the
